The technology of noise cancellation headphones has been around since the 1950s but only in the public arena since the 1980′s. Bose Corporation, the high end audio suppliers were the first to release this technology. One of their staff traveling on a commercial airline found the headphones issued to be lacking. Many people today will not travel long distances on flights without their noise canceling headphones. So the question is how do they work and what makes a good set of headphones?

Noise cancellation technology works with a microphone ‘listening’ to the noise around you. They record these sounds and invert them and that inverted sound being the opposite of the sound outside effectively cancels it out. This technology works best for a constant sound such as an airplane engine or an air conditioning unit. They are less effective on rapidly changing noises such as speech as the sound waves change quickly and the inverting technology, working in real time; struggle to keep up with the changes.

All noise cancellation headphones need a battery to work. In some models the battery is housed with the cables which can make it somewhat inconvenient. More useful models have the battery in the headphone casing itself meaning no excess bulk or inconvenience is created. Some models allow the headphones to continue working as normal headphones without the noise cancellation technology when the battery runs out.

The two main versions of headphones are the over ear surround model and the on ear models. The over ear surround acts as a passive noise eliminator. Like an ear muff, sound is prevented from reaching the ear canal. Add to this noise cancellation technology these eliminate the most outside ambient noise. However they can be heavier than the alternative and some people find them sweaty when used for long periods of time.

The on ear version of noise cancellation headphones rest on the outside of the ear. They are usually lighter and allow more airflow as a consequence. The potential downside is they naturally reduce less noise and are less effective at reducing loud volume.

The ability to detach the cabling may be something you would use. Some people like to use them without listening to music. They just want the constant noise around them to disappear. This can be useful to protect the hearing such as when you’re out mowing the lawn.

If you use your noise cancellation headphones for travel or work, it is a good idea to keep them protected while not in use. For that reason, check out the carrying case provided. If you think you will knock them around a lot it will pay to look for a protective hard case.

Sennheiser headphones and the audio enthusiast go back a few years. This company offers headphones in a wide variety of prices and capabilities. Sennheiser also makes a number of different audio headsets and other devices, and all such audio devices are of the best quality and the widest availability.

As a matter of classification, Sennheiser normally sorts its headphones into more than a few different categories. Some fall into wired headphones categories while others will be sorted into wireless headphone categories. There are professional and semi-professional lineups in addition to headphones made for the amateur enthusiast. All of these niches are well-defined, like the DJ headphones in the Sport line of headphones.

Sennheiser has more than a dozen different wired headphones in the lineup. All are of differing prices and differing capabilities. Generally, they’re available either as on-the-ear or as around-the-ear. In some models, bass response is emphasized more than in others, depending on how pricey the headphones are. Additionally, others will specialize in passive noise attenuation.

Sennheiser headphones can come in wireless capable delivery systems. For the most part, the company utilizes radio frequency (called “RF”) rather than infrared-type technology. Certain headphones in the lineup come equipped with SRS Surround Sound capability. There is even one model which is equipped with rechargeable batteries already inside.

One thing to keep in mind with any sort of wireless headphone setup is battery power. The need to change out alkaline batteries can occur quite frequently due to the power drain inherent in these wireless headphones. At any rate, it’s always a good idea to invest a few dollars in a couple pairs of rechargeable batteries. Your pocketbook will thank you in the long run.

As always, there are people out there who are looking to have the best sound reproduction and audio quality possible even in their headphones. Sennheiser understands this and markets a lineup of audiophile headphones that deliver high-quality sound with very little noise distortion, all while extending excellent wear comfort. Sennheiser headphones in this lineup aren’t cheap, but most audio fans would say that they are worth the price.

Among audio enthusiasts, Sennheiser is a well-known company and also appreciated for the quality of its craftsmanship and also for how much attention it pays to good customer service. It has an excellent array of headphones and other audio devices on the market, and customers consistently rate the headphones very highly. As with anything else, personal preference will usually play the greatest role when it comes to purchasing something like this. Sennheiser understands this and tries to stand out from the crowd.

What to know about lightweight headphones comes down to taking some time to do a bit of research for what most folks who are interested in getting good sounding headphones are looking for. What’s also for certain is that as little as ten years ago, such quality headphones were a bit pricey and were pretty awkward to wear. Now, with new materials available, this isn’t the case anymore.

Technological improvement along with increased material quality have combined to make it possible to deliver very light, very durable headphone units. Remember, the types of headphones under discussion aren’t of the kind that many a flight attendant has passed out to passengers on a plane. No, the kinds that are most interesting are the ones that can create extremely good sound. All come from several well-known makers.

So, what should a person be looking for when it’s finally time to get a pair of lightweight headphones? Well, the first consideration for most non-audiophile types will be cost. Most folks don’t want to pay several hundred bucks, though there are people out there who wouldn’t bat an eyelash at the thought. Just go online to get an idea of prices and selection, which is always a good first step.

What many consumers may not know is that — in certain cases — some headphones that are light will have the standard wire that runs from the audio source to the headphone’s audio input source. Many people naturally assume that wireless devices would be lighter but they might also be mistaken. Batteries add additional weight to wireless units, and also bulk that regular wired headphones don’t have.

As is the case when it comes to electronic equipment that needs to be relatively light, the costlier or more expensive units generally are also the lightest. That additional cost has been used to create headphones that use lighter but stronger and more durable materials and also added expensive technologies that create good sound and lighter weight.

One thing to keep in mind is that the lightest headphones are usually fairly cheap and poorly-made. And they fail to deliver on sound quality promises, for the most part. In this regard, take some time to land on a pair of headphones that deliver on sound, weight and price. However, if sound quality is the overriding concern, the one can expect the impact on the pocketbook to be noticeable, though real audiophiles won’t care in the least.

The bottom line when it comes to lightweight headphones is that a person’s personal preferences as to just what comprises a set of such headphones will take precedence over everything else. Because of that, take just a small amount of time to find out what’s needed in a set of headphones and why they’re needed before putting out some cash for them. In the end, happily enough, good quality can be had without breaking the bank.

Many people need lightweight headphones for sports like jogging, gym workouts and other physical activities.
