How To Cure Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?

Have you ever noticed how you feel more energetic, out of bed and active, more in summers as compared to winters? How a rainy day makes us feel a bit down and sunny days make us feel more cheerful. There is an actual scientific reason for a human body to react this way, and it is directly proportional to the amount of sunlight we are exposed to, and the levels of melatonin, and serotonin in our body.

The term Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) refers to a type of depression, which is associated with the shortening of days towards the winter season. As the days become shorter, the exposure of body to sunlight is less than the summer months when the days are longer hence, “winter blues” settle in.

This type of depression usually creeps up around the same time every year starting with the fall, and lasting all the way through the winter months. The symptoms of this depression become intense with the intensity of weather, and the shortening of days, which is why it is difficult to pin point the most common months for the symptoms to appear. In some rare cases, SAD tends to appear and/or in the summer months.

For the people suffering with this kind of depression, symptoms include low energy levels, fatigue, mood swings, and irritability, lack of concentration and carbohydrate craving leading to weight gain. For those suffering in summers may suffer insomnia, weight loss associated with lack of appetite, and general irritability. In some severe cases, thoughts of suicide have been reported.

According to statistical analysis, the chances of a person being affected by SAD are various, which can increase. These include living far from the equator, as this would mean a significant lesser amount of sunlight in the winter months, and a family history of depression; it is likely that a person who suffers from SAD would have blood relatives who have the same disorder.

The main attribute responsible for causing the disease is not yet clear until now, and can be the age, the hormones, or the gene of the person. In our bodies we have an inside clock, known as the circadian rhythm. It gets upset, causing a malfunction, if not enough sunlight is given to the body.

The disease affects people who are severely depressed and not following an everyday routine. It is suggested for them to visit an expert psychologist or psychiatrist. These people offer several sessions and therapies to help them in recovering from SAD including light and psychotherapy or some drugs to fight depression.

It is not hard to fight SAD, and being away from this disorder. If a person is showing signs of the disease, his room should be immediately painted with bright colours to bring back vitality in his life. He should go more in sunlight, especially during office hours, and home. Even by getting involved in several activities, people tend to be stress free, and seldom get depressed especially for those people who stay close to nature.
