We’ve had e-book readers for a decade now – the original reader, the Franklin Ebookman, launched in’99. 2009 has definitely been the year when these devices exploded onto the public stage though. Currently Amazon are the market leaders with their Kindle family. E-books and e-book readers are a perfect fit for Amazon’s product portfolio. Small wonder that they launched two of them in 2009.

Although Amazon are being unashamedly coy with regard to sales figures, there can be little doubt that they are happy with the performance of their Kindle ebook reader family to date. The original Kindle was launched in November 2007 and demand was so high that Amazon’s shelves were empty less than 6 hours later. It remained out of stock until April 2008.

Amazon’s e-book reader – the Kindle – is, at least in my opinion, very close to the perfect product. Certainly, as someone who reads a lot I must be fairly close to the Amazon marketing men’s target customer. Typically, I expect to read an absolute minimum of a book a week – and it’s quite common for me to have one novel, one non-fiction and a number of reference books under scrutiny at any one time.
