Anytime a Hollywood film is produced the aspiration is to produce a motion picture that the public loves and that will become a blockbuster hit. Take a excellent story, throw in a few celebrated actors along with some special effects and voila’, a huge box office success. But it does not always work that way. Sometimes a film will contain everything that you think might make it a success and it still fails at the box office. There is no such thing as a sure thing in Hollywood.

The Net – Angela Bennett is a computer geek. She is provided with a program, and is asked to de-bug it. Soon after receiving the program, the man who sent it to her is murdered. What’s on the disc is of vital significance to someone. They know she has it, and she is now running for her life as she attempts to figure out just who is after her, and why.

After Life – This is a delightfully crafted tale of case workers at a train station between the heavens who assist the recently departed to decide on a lone moment from their pasts to live inside forever. This is a peaceful, poetic measure of life, death, and memory, filled with soft humor and blessedly free of some feel-good platitudes. Cast includes Aarata, Erika Oda, Susuma Terajirna, Taketoshi Naito, Kyoko Kagawa, Kei Tani, Takashi Naito, and Yusuke lseya. (118 minutes, 1998)

Christmas Vacation – The Griswalds have big plans for Christmas this year. Clark has invited a group of the relations over for the enormous celebration. Clark’s efforts go foolishly bad, par for the course for a Griswald holiday.

Unlawful Entry – Michael and Karen Carr have had a frightening happening. Someone broke into their house, and attempted to steal from them. When Officer Pete Davis shows up to assist, he appears to be a godsend. In the days to come they find police officer Davis might be their worst nightmare.

Married To The Mob – Angela deMarco is married to hoodlum Frank deMarco. When Frank passes away, Angela wishes to escape the mob and start again. Instead she discovers herself being followed by the FBI.

The Last Time I Saw Archie – Webb’s single try at comedy is less foolish than some of his more earnest films; a shame, since William Bowers’ script-based on his own Army experiences had legitimate potential, and Mitchum agreeably underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes, 1961)

Sexy Beast – A retired British criminal, living the life in Spain, is visited by a fierce gangster who wants him to work one more heist. Trendy, aggressive, current day gangster’s film has excellent acting containing a special performance by Kingsley as the wicked perpetrator. Cast includes Ray Winstune, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Cavan Kendall, Julianne White, Alvaro Monje, and James Fox. (88 minutes, 2001)

Scandalous – Featherbrained sham in regards to investigative Television journalist who runs afoul of a team of con artists as he tries to extricate himself from a homicide charge. Cast includes Robert Hays, John Giegud, Pamela Stephenson, and Jim Dale. (94 minutes, 1984)
